Entomology
Insect Taxonomy

The Insect Taxonomy Laboratory at the Division of Entomology, focuses on the discovery, identification, classification, and documentation of agriculturally important insect fauna. It maintains and curates the National Pusa Collection (NPC), serving as a national repository for insect biodiversity in India. The laboratory integrates classical morphology with modern tools such as molecular systematics, DNA barcoding, and digital imaging to develop accurate and rapid diagnostic systems. Its research supports pest surveillance, quarantine, and biodiversity conservation.

Insect Physiology

The Insect Physiology Lab conducts advanced research on the functional biology of insects with emphasis on biochemical, molecular, and hormonal regulation of growth, development, reproduction, and stress responses. The lab investigates insect–plant interactions, nutritional ecology, and physiological adaptations that influence pest status under changing climatic conditions. Also, investigate physiology of insect diapause, symbionts and novel molecular biology tools for insect pest management.  Insights generated contribute to the development of novel, target-specific pest management strategies, including disruption of key metabolic pathways and behavior-modifying interventions.

Insect Toxicology

The Insect Toxicology Laboratory focuses on understanding the efficacy, mode of action, and environmental impact of synthetic and natural insecticides against storage and field crop pests. Research includes insecticide resistance monitoring, and safety evaluation in target and non-target organisms. Development of baseline susceptibility data on major insect pests is also another area of research. The laboratory also works on developing safer molecules, evaluating biopesticides, and establishing guidelines for judicious pesticide use, thereby contributing to sustainable crop protection and environmental safety.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

The IPM team develops eco-friendly, economically viable, and location-specific pest management strategies for major agricultural and vegetable crops. It integrates multiple approaches, including host plant resistance, cultural practices, biological control, and need-based chemical interventions. They also emphasize pest surveillance, forecasting models, and decision support systems to enable timely interventions. Its research is directed toward minimizing reliance on chemical pesticides, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and safeguarding food and nutritional security.

Biological Control

This lab is dedicated to the exploration, evaluation, and utilization of natural enemies such as parasitoids, predators, and entomopathogens for pest management. It undertakes surveys for native bioagents, mass multiplication, and field release strategies for key pests in diverse agroecosystems. The lab also studies ecological interactions and compatibility of bioagents within IPM frameworks, aiming to promote environmentally benign and long-term pest suppression strategies.
