Electron Microscopy
The Plant Virology Unit is equipped with high end Transmission Microscope (Make: JEM 1011) to study the morphology of virus particles and other smaller objects. It has capacity to achieve resolution better than 0.1 nm and magnifications of up to about 10,000,000 X. Since the very beginning of Plant Virology research in India, the etiology of a large number of viral diseases and specific association of viral agents was deciphered utilising this national facility.
This facility wasinitiallysetup in the year 1987 under UNDP programme which was later upgraded in the year 2003 under ICAR-NATP. The latest version of Transmission Microscope (Make: JEM 1011) was installed in 2012 in Plant Virology Unit, Division of Plant Pathology, ICAR-IARI under IARI-EFC.
The facility has capacity to perform transmission electron microscopy (TEM), immunosorbent electron microscopy (ISEM) and immunogold labelling
Activities
Transmission electron microscope is used for studying:
  • Virus particle morphology
  • Decoration of virus particles using specific antibodies (Immunosorbent electron microscopy)
  • Immunogold labelling
Revenue Generated: A revenue of more than Rs. 6 Lakhs per year is generated by Transmission Microscopy Facility
