  • Pusa Sawani, the first YVMV resistant variety of okra saturated the entire country and led to establishment of private vegetable seed industry in India.
  • Pusa Ruby variety of tomato became very popular because of its suitability to rainfed condition and slightly higher acidity made it popular to Indian cuisine and still very popular among growers.
  • IARI standardized temperate vegetable seed production and developed improved varieties of snowball cauliflower, cabbage, turnip and temperate carrot.
  • Ogura CMS system has been established in all the maturity group of cauliflower and is being used in hybrid development.
  • Detailed investigation in the germplasm of cauliflower led to the development of the theory that Indian cauliflower was a separate group and it was distinctly different from the European types. Different maturity groups originated by simple selection, and later perhaps of recombination, as a result of natural crossing between different European types.
  • Self-incompatible lines in Indian cauliflower have been developed and are being used in hybrid seed production.
  • Detailed karyotype analysis of cucumber and muskmelon led to the establishment of the theory that cucumber and muskmelon followed two different courses of evolution in Asia and Africa, respectively. Electrophoretic analysis of enzymes revealed that there was little similarity between two species of the genus Cucumis.
  • Male sterile and maintainer lines have been isolated in short day onion Pusa Red and this will help in development of F1 hybrids in near future.
  • Recessive gene marker has been isolated in pumpkin, which can be used for hybrid seed production on commercial scale.
  • Genetical studies viz., heterosis, combining ability, sex expression and gene action (inheritance of characters) of important qualitative and quantitative traits have been studied in all the important vegetable crops.
